I haven't read of his books before but this was just getting a boatload of buzz before its pub date and I was compelled to read it. And I'm glad I did. Nice to be in the minority :) The only logic I can think for epilogues is to show that the characters aren't so emotionally scarred by their experiences that they can't go on to have a 'normal' life. I guess it's seen as more important in fiction aimed at young and possibly impressionable readers.
