Booking Through Thursday: Age Appropriate

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Booking Through Thursday asks: Do you read books “meant” for other age groups? Adult books when you were a child; Young-Adult books now that you’re grown; Picture books just for kicks … You know … books not “meant” for you. Or do you pretty much stick to what’s written for people your age?

For the most part I read books intended for grown adults. Of course there are exceptions like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. I think my partner best put it best when he said that “young adult books have more imagination”. I agree. Sure, they aren’t challenging for me on an intellectual level but they are damn fun to read sometimes.

When I was younger I didn’t read much but when I did I stuck to books intended for my age group such as Goosebumps and the Choose Your Own Adventure series. I still read the CYOA books and have a pretty nice collection of the originals going.

Then, there are also comics, although, I don’t think these comics are intended for children. They tend to be more on the mature side of things.

Booking Through Thursday: Not In Theaters

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Booking Through Thursday asks: Name one book that you hope never, ever, ever gets made into a movie (no matter how good that movie might be).

Any book by Christopher Moore should not be made in to a movie. His books are filled with jokes and characters and shrinking them down to a two hour movie would lose what makes them so good.

If I only had to pick one book to single out, I would say Bloodsucking Fiends because that runs the very real risk of being turned in to a movie since vampires are all the rage these days. Since there are three books in Moore’s vampire series, the potential for multiple movies is there. But each book is different in its own right. So please, no Bloodsucking Fiends: The Movie.

Booking Through Thursday: Coming Soon to a Theater Near You

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Booking Through Thursday asks: If you could see one book turned into the perfect movie–one that would capture everything you love, the characters, the look, the feel, the story–what book would you choose?

Clive Barker’s Abarat series. The books (a would-be 5 book series if it ever gets finished) contain hundreds of original paints by Clive Barker himself. It’s such a weird, twisted world that I don’t know if I would want them to ever adapt it in to a film because so much would have to be cut.

But with the Harry Potter series ending soon, movie studios are looking for a new franchise. Clive Barker has done movie before so i’m sure somewhere down the line, maybe after all the books are released, there will be serious talks about adapting Abarat into a film. Back in 2004 I think Disney held the rights but they let them expire or something.

Booking Through Thursday: Visual?

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

Booking Through Thursday asks The books that you own (however many there may be) … do you display them proudly right there in plain sight for all the world to see? (At least the world that comes into your living room.) Or do you keep them tucked away in your office or bedroom or library or closet or someplace less “public?”

I keep my books wherever there is room. I have bookshelves in the living room, dining room, and the office. They aren’t organized by any mores. There are even books in boxes in one of the closets. Obviously, those books are ones that I don’t plan on reading anytime soon. I also have a stack of books on my desk and on the shelf above my desk. On my desk is the stack of books I need to get around to reviewing or library books. Above, is my reference books for when I am writing such as dictionary, glossary of literary terms, and various books about television. There’s also a video game up there which hasn’t been opened because I’m saving it as my reward for doing something. I haven’t decided what I must do to allow myself to open that game.

So, to sum up, my books are everywhere.

Booking Through Thursday: Oddest Thing Ever Read

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Booking Through Thursday asks: What’s the oddest thing you’ve ever read? (You know, something NOT a book, magazine, short story, poem or article.)

Okay, so one time I was bored and was playing around on Craigslist and I came across this under Rants and Raves (or something, I forget). In it, this guy has written personal notes to ALL of his ex-girlfriends telling them how he felt, what they did wrong, what he did wrong, etc. There was probably something around 20 different girls. I can’t remember what the point of it was, but I remember finding it pretty funny. I printed it out too thinking that I might be able to use something from it for a story. It’s still around here, somewhere.

Booking Through Thursday: Serial?

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Booking Through Thursday asks: Series? Or Stand-alone books?

Stand-alone. I like having a sense of finality when I am done reading a book. Sure, there are some book series that are fantastic (Harry Potter, Lemony Snicket, etc) but I think though are more geared towards younger readers as a way to hook them into reading. I’ve also noticed that mystery books tend to be made up of a series. Janet Evanovich, Sue Grafton, that one author who writes murder mysteries about food. I think writing a series is more often used for profit because of an already established readership. I’m not saying these books are bad, but it seems like an easy crutch to lean on.

Booking Through Thursday: Multi-Tasking

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Booking Through Thursday asks: Do you multi-task when you read? Do other things like stirring things on the stove, brushing your teeth, watching television, knitting, walking, et cetera? Or is it just me, and you sit and do nothing but focus on what you’re reading? (Or, if you do both, why, when, and which do you prefer?)

When I read it’s typically just me sitting on the couch or in bed. I’m not able to concentrate on the book if I’m also watching TV or trying to do some other activity. At most, the furthest I can take my multi-tasking while reading is on public transportation. I can travel and read at the same time, but that’s it.

Booking Through Thursday: Cheating

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

Booking Through Thursday asks: Do you cheat and peek at the ends of books? (Come on, be honest.)

No. Often times the chase is better than the catch. The journey is half the fun. Etc.

That was a simple question.

General Stuff
Since January 2008 I have been using this blog to write about the books i've read and other book related news that I find interesting. I also find pirates interesting so from time to time I may blog about pirates. I see this as killing two birds with one stone.

Review Policy
Dear Publishers/Authors,

I am always willing to discuss reviewing you book on my blog. Discovering new authors is one of the things I love about book blogging. However, I do not accept all books for review. If it's not in my usual genre chances are I am going to decline the offer.

A couple of genres I dislike are: Self-Help, YA Paranormal, Hardcore Science-Fiction, and Depressing Memoirs.

Some genres I really enjoy: Pirates, Satire, Pulp Fiction, Queer Fiction, YA Fiction (Non-Paranormal and Non-Gossip Girl-esq) and Comical Memoirs.

Here's the thing. If you e-mail me asking me to review a book, I will always respond and let you know if I am interested or not. If you don't hear back from me, feel free to send a follow-up e-mail. No longer will I just ignore your e-mail.
